New Delhi:
A U.S. senator recently shared with her colleagues and the public her decision to have an abortion due to her inability to conceive. Her revelations in the Arizona Senate revealed the real impact of the stateβs abortion restrictions.
First-term Democratic congresswoman and former women’s health nurse Eva Burch, 43, shared her “rocky journey” with fertility, including a previous miscarriage. Her decision to speak out was motivated by a desire to highlight the consequences of Arizona’s abortion law, which she believes is “out of touch” with reality.

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution for people seeking abortion care, nor does the Legislature have any authority to specify one,” Birch said in Monday’s speech.
This isn’t the first time she’s spoken about her abortion history. During the 2022 campaign, she publicly discussed previous abortions due to inviability. Burch recalled the painful experience of doctors waiting until her condition became critical before terminating the pregnancy.
Arizona currently has a 15-week abortion ban in place while the state’s Supreme Court considers the possibility of reinstating a 19th-century law that effectively bans all abortions unless the life of the pregnant woman is at risk.
Despite Democratic efforts to introduce bills that address abortion rights, the proposals have yet to receive committee hearings. The proposed bill would guarantee the right to abortion up to about 24 weeks, while allowing abortion later if maternal health or life is at risk.
