The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said on Sunday that it “strongly” condemns the Philippine ambassador to Washington’s recent China-related remarks, saying it “ignores basic facts.”
The Chinese Embassy said in a statement that the relevant remarks “wanted to hype the South China Sea issue, speculate and maliciously smear China.”
Jose Manuel Romualz said on Wednesday that while the United States considers the South China Sea and a potential conflict over Taiwan to be “serious concerns,” given “all these skirmishes taking place there,” he believes “the real The flashpoint is the West Philippine Sea.”
The Chinese Embassy said, “Bringing wolves into the house and creating cliques will not only not help resolve disputes in the South China Sea, but will complicate the regional situation and undermine regional peace and stability.”
Romualdez was urged to stop spreading the “China threat theory” and “persecution paranoia” and not “act as a spokesperson for other countries.”
The Philippine Embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Maritime disputes in the South China Sea have stoked tensions, with Beijing and Manila blaming each other for a series of clashes.
China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, a passageway for more than $3 trillion in annual shipping trade, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The Permanent Court of Arbitration said in 2016 that China’s claims had no legal basis. But Beijing does not recognize the court’s authority.
