Indore, October 25 (IANS) Akil Khan, arrested in connection with the alleged molestation of two Australian women cricketers in Indore, has a previous criminal record, according to Indore Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajesh Dandotia.

Speaking to IANS, Dandotia said the accused man – Akil Khan, a resident of Azad Nagar in Indore – was involved in several criminal cases, and was also in jail earlier. However, when exactly he was in jail and for what crime, it is not yet known.

He said, “After several rounds of police interrogation, the accused person has been sent to jail. During investigation, it was revealed that criminal cases were registered against him in some other police stations of Indore earlier also.”

It was Danny Simmons, the security manager of the Australian cricket team, who first informed the Indore police. The police officer said prompt cooperation between the Australian team security officer, Simmons and local police led to a swift investigation.

He said, “We received a complaint from the security manager of the Australian cricket team. After registering the FIR at the MIG police station on Thursday, police teams conducted extensive searches. After a six-hour search operation, the accused was identified and arrested.”

He also confirmed that a spectator who recorded the number of the motorcycle played an important role in identifying the culprit, based on which accused Khan was arrested.

According to the police, the incident happened near Khajrana Road. The suspect, identified as Akil Khan, reportedly chased two players on his motorcycle, touched one of them inappropriately and then fled the scene.

No woman should have to face such inappropriate behavior. Our deepest condolences to the affected players.”

He further wrote, “This incident is extremely painful not only for the players but for the entire sporting fraternity and our state and city. The entire Madhya Pradesh, especially Indore, has always been renowned for the respect and safety of its guests. The inappropriate conduct of one person has dealt a blow to this prestigious image, which we all are deeply saddened by.”
