Olympic swimming champion Gregorio Paltrinieri starts the torch relay match Cortina Winter Games on Saturday – just two months before the opening ceremonies on February 6.
Paltrinieri began the 12,000-kilometre (about 7,500-mile) journey carrying the torch around the track of the statue-studded Stadio dei Marmi at the Foro Italico, which will pass through all 110 Italian provinces before reaching Milan’s San Siro stadium for the opening ceremony.
In total, there will be 10,001 torch bearers.
Also due to carrying the torch around Rome were tennis players on saturday matteo berettiniretired nba Sportsman Andrea Bargnani and former motorcycle racer Max Biaggi.
The torch relay, which involves celebrations from 60 cities, will take place in Naples for Christmas and in Bari for New Year’s Eve. It will reach 2006 Olympic host Turin on 11 January.
The torch will reach Verona on January 18 and pass through Cortina d’Ampezzo on January 26 – the 70th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the 1956 Winter Olympics, held in the resort in the Dolomites.
A cauldron will also be lit in Cortina on the night of the opening ceremony.
The Games will be held across a large part of Northern Italy and celebrations will take place at four different locations Livigno (where snowboarding and freestyle skiing competitions will take place) and Predazzo (ski jumping).
Skating games will be held in Milan; men’s alpine skiing and ski mountaineering in Bormio; and women’s alpine skiing, sliding sports and curling in Cortina.
The next stops for the torch relay are Viterbo on Sunday and Terni on Monday.
