Thames Water Holdings’ crisis deepened after it announced it was defaulting on its debt.

Kemble Water said it had failed to make an interest payment due on Tuesday.

The company said it had asked lenders not to take immediate action in order to “provide a stable platform while all options are explored”.

The announcement paves the way for a potential restructuring of Thames Water, which serves nearly a quarter of the UK’s population.
