Tejashwi Yadav promises ₹30,000 salary, permanent jobs if India Bloc comes to power in Bihar

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday announced that if the India Bloc comes to power in the state, around 2 lakh ‘community workers’ among all the contractual workers and ‘jeevika didis’ employed in various departments of the Bihar government will be made permanent.

Yadav also promised that if the opposition coalition forms a government in the state after the upcoming assembly elections, these ‘community workers’ will be given a monthly salary of Rs 30,000.

Speaking to reporters here, the RJD leader said that if India Bloc comes to power in Bihar, the interest on the loans taken by ‘Jeevika Didis’ will be waived off.

The state government is leading the World Bank assisted Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project (BRLP), locally known as ‘Jeevika’, with the aim of social and economic empowerment of the rural poor. The women associated with the project are called ‘Jeevika Didi’.

A ‘Community Mobiliser’ acts as a facilitator for Self Help Groups (SHGs). Their main responsibility is to facilitate SHG meetings, prepare books of records and they are also responsible for the overall nurturing of such groups.

Tejashwi said, “All contractual employees engaged in government departments will be made permanent. The NDA government is not concerned about the welfare of the ‘Jeevika Didis’ in the state… They are suffering a lot. I announce that if we come to power, we will make about 2 lakh ‘community workers’ among the ‘Jeevika Didis’ as permanent government employees and give them a salary of Rs 30,000 per month.”

The former deputy CM also said that if the opposition faction comes to power, “interest on the existing loans of Jeevika Didis will be waived off, and interest-free loans will be provided for the next two years”.

“Our government will also provide a health insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh to all ‘Jeevika Didis’ of the state. They will also be given an additional allowance of Rs 2000 per month if they are engaged in other government activities,” he had promised before the assembly elections.

According to estimates, more than 1.45 crore ‘Jeevika Didis’ are working in the state.

The RJD leader had earlier promised a government job for every family in the state “within 20 months of assuming power in the state”.

He had announced that “a new law guaranteeing employment will be introduced within 20 days of the formation of the government”, and that the scheme “will be fully implemented across the state within 20 months of assuming charge”.

Yadav alleged, “The work of filing nominations for the elections is over… now the full campaign campaign has started. This time, the people of Bihar have made up their mind for a change. People are fed up with this ‘double engine’ NDA government. Corruption and crime have increased in this ‘double engine’ government. People are frustrated with unemployment and migration.”

The term “double engine” is used by BJP leaders to refer to the party being in power at the Center as well as the state.

Reacting to Yadav’s announcements, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said, “RJD leaders are making false promises, and will never fulfill them. RJD leaders do not care about the people of the state. Why is he making such promises before the elections? He knows that people will not vote for him in the assembly elections.”
