Teacher awarded £150,000 after being head-butted by pupil

A Welsh teacher has been awarded £150,000 in compensation after being attacked by a pupil, new figures show.

He was head-butted and punched by a pupil at a school for boys with social, emotional and behavioral problems, causing injuries to his face, mouth and head and suffering psychological trauma.

NASUWT said it took action after the man’s employer denied responsibility.

The court ruled in the teacher’s favor and awarded him compensation.

Separately, NASUWT said an assistant principal received more than £43,000 in compensation.

An employment tribunal ruled the 48-year-old employee had been unfairly dismissed.

Her school was created through a merger and underwent a management reorganization.

The union argued the dismissal was unfair as no suitable alternative employment had been offered and she was also dismissed from her part-time role as an art and design teacher and Welsh BA teacher.

In total, NASUWT members received over £14.2 million in compensation in 2023.

Secretary General Dr Patrick Roach said the level of compensation showed the education system had “failed in its duty of care to the profession”.

“No amount of compensation can make up for the devastating impact of physical and mental injuries at work,” he said.

“Teachers have the right to be treated with dignity and to be safe while at work.”
