Chandigarh, Oct 25 (IANS) The BJP got a big boost in the Tarn Taran bypoll in Punjab as Congress leaders Ranjit Singh Dhillon, chairman block committee, and Jagmeet Dhillon, block Congress committee president in Gandhiwind, joined the BJP on Saturday and expressed their commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
Welcoming the leaders into the party, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh said that their decision reflects the growing confidence of the people of Punjab in the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said that leaders across the state have now realized that BJP is the only party which is truly committed to development, good governance and national interest. Chugh further said that the failure and mismanagement of the Aam Aadmi Party government has pushed Punjab into crisis, while the Congress is mired in nepotism and directionless leadership.
This situation, he said, has forced genuine grassroots leaders to look for a platform that values their commitment and dedication towards Punjab. Both Ranjit Singh Dhillon and Jagmeet Dhillon expressed confidence that under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Modi, Punjab will witness a new era of stability, progress and inclusive growth in the years to come.
Meanwhile, the ruling AAP in the state got a boost when Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) sarpanch Jashandeep Singh joined the party along with many of his supporters.
Cabinet Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, in the presence of Working President Amansher Singh Sherry Kalsi, Sarwan Singh Dhun, and State General Secretary Harchand Singh Barsat, formally inducted Jashandeep Singh and his associates — Avtar Singh, Davinder Singh, Pargat Singh, Darshan Singh, Narinder Pal Kaur, Baljit Kaur, and Kanwar Jagdeep Singh Ladda Chhichrewal — into the Aam Aadmi Party.
Minister Bhullar assured all the newly joined leaders that they will be given due respect and recognition within the party. Attacking the opposition parties, Bhullar said that Akali Dal, Congress and BJP only do politics of mudslinging, while Aam Aadmi Party does politics of work and demonstration.
He highlighted that under AAP’s 600 units free electricity guarantee, 82 per cent of households in Punjab are now getting zero electricity bills, and more than 881 mohalla clinics are functioning, providing free medicines, treatments and diagnostic tests to the public.
The Tarn Taran by-election on November 11 was necessitated by the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal, who won the seat with 52,935 votes, defeating Shiromani Akali Dal’s Harmeet Singh Sandhu.
Fifteen candidates are in the fray. These include Sukhwinder Kaur of Shiromani Akali Dal, Harjeet Singh Sandhu of BJP, Harmeet Singh Sandhu of Aam Aadmi Party and Karanbir Singh of Congress.
