New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy announced the suspension of her Senate campaign in a video posted to her X account, cbs news the report said.
“Winning the Democratic primary would require her to run a very divisive and negative campaign,” but she was unwilling to do that, she said.
In November, Murphy was announced as the replacement for Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez, who announced Thursday that he would no longer run for Senate as a Democrat due to corruption allegations.
Menendez and his wife were accused of accepting bribes including gold, luxury cars and cash from a New Jersey businessman. The trial is scheduled to begin in May.
Now, Murphy has dropped out of the Democratic Senate race, clearing the way for Andy Kim to win the New Jersey nomination on June 4.
Murphy, the wife of New Jersey Governor Philip Murphy, has announced that she will use this time to campaign with President Joe Biden to help him win re-election in the upcoming 2024 US election.
“Donald Trump has been elected and our country faces so much at stake that I will not in good conscience waste resources suppressing a fellow Democrat,” she said.
