Chennai, Oct 25 (IANS) Actor-turned-politician Vijay is likely to meet the families of Karur stampede victims in Mahabalipuram near Chennai on October 27, a month after the tragic incident in which 41 people lost their lives and over 60 were injured.
According to Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) sources, the party has booked around 50 rooms at a resort in Mahabalipuram to host the bereaved families and facilitate Vijay’s personal interaction with them.
“He will personally meet each family to offer his condolences and support,” a party insider said.
Relatives of the victims from Karur confirmed that they were invited to the meeting and transportation was arranged for them.
“They have arranged a bus for us to reach the venue. Many of us are leaving,” one of the victims’ family members told reporters in Karur.
The stampede in Karur on September 27 occurred as a crowd gathered at a public meeting addressed by Vijay, one of the first major incidents of his political organisation.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and calls for a detailed investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
However, the upcoming meeting has sparked new debate on social media. Many users criticized the actor-politician for calling the bereaved families in Karur to Mahabalipuram instead of personally meeting them.
“It would have been more respectful and humane if he had gone to her house,” one user posted.
Defending the decision, a senior TVK functionary said that Vijay had earlier attempted to visit Karur, but the authorities had denied him permission, citing law and order concerns.
“This is the only possible way for all families to meet together in a safe environment,” the official said. Perumal from Velusamipuram, who lost his two young daughters in the stampede, expressed disappointment at the arrangement.
“It is not appropriate for us to go to them. They should meet us,” he told reporters.
Sources said only the families of the deceased have been invited to Mahabalipuram, while the injured are unlikely to attend the meeting due to health and logistical reasons.
