Rishabh Pant can do no wrong on Wednesday. In IPL 2024, Pant led Delhi Capitals against Gujarat Titans and his wicketkeeping was top-notch as he was dismissed multiple times as GT managed just 89 runs. He then went unbeaten, taking Washington home in just 8.5 runs. DC’s victory came with 67 balls remaining, their biggest win in the IPL (in terms of balls remaining). While the GT batsmen did not perform well with the bat, the lively Pant made their stay on the pitch difficult.

One of his four dismissals behind the stumps is going viral. The incident happened in the fifth over when David Miller pushed away a delivery from Ishant Sharma. The ball took an awkward route from the inside edge but Rishabh Pant was ready and he caught it deftly by diving to his left.

Before the match, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting spoke about Pant’s chances as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper in the T20 World Cup.

“Do I believe Rishabh should be in the World Cup squad? I absolutely do. At the end of the IPL, he should be in the WT20 squad,” Ponting told PTI in an exclusive interview.

“I think we’ve seen what Rishabh has done in the IPL over the last five or six years and now back in the Indian team,” the Australian batting superstar added.

While he admitted that the Indian selectors had a lot of options to choose from as a wicketkeeper-batsman, Pant remained his first choice.

“We certainly know there is a lot of depth in Indian cricket. For the wicketkeeper-batsmen, I feel some are in really good form at the moment. (Ishan) Kishan is playing well, (Sanju) Samson is playing well, KL Rahul is playing well Good, there are many options but if I pick a team, I will have Rishabh Pant every week,” the ‘punter’ decided.
