A bishop and several worshipers were stabbed in an attack that was filmed during a live-streamed service at a Sydney church, just two days after a mass stabbing in a shopping center.
Police said a man was arrested after an attack was reported at the Church of the Good Shepherd of Christ in Wakeley, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, just after 7pm local time.
Video shared on social media showed Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel addressing the congregation before a man dressed in black walked up to where he was standing and stabbed him repeatedly. Screams were heard before members of the congregation ran to the front to try and help the bishop.
Several worshipers were also injured in the attack. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.
A spokesman for New South Wales Ambulance told Australian media that a man in his 50s was taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds, and three other people were also injured and were being treated at the scene.
NSW Police said: “Police are taking action in Wakeley following reports of a stabbing. Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command attended an address in Welcome Street, Wakeley following reports of a number of people. stabbed.
“Police have arrested a man who is assisting police with their inquiries. The victim’s injuries are not life-threatening and are being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics. More information will be provided as soon as it is available.”
On Saturday afternoon, a mass stabbing incident occurred at the Westfield Shopping Center in Bondi Junction, Sydney, leaving six people dead and 12 injured.
Police said the attacker appeared to be deliberately targeting women.
