Australian police said on Sunday that two people are now in custody.
“The police operation is ongoing and we are urging people to avoid the area,” New South Wales Police said in a post on Twitter.
Sydney Morning Herald said there were reports of multiple shootings at the famous beach but it was not clear if anyone was shot.
“Anyone at the scene should seek shelter,” New South Wales Police posted on Twitter.
Videos broadcast on X, which could not be independently verified, show people scattering on Bondi Beach as multiple gunshots and police sirens are heard.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “We are aware of the active security situation in Bondi. We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police.”
