The Kerala police have arrested three members of a gang, including a minor, in two incidents of stealing chocolates and ice cream worth over Rs 1 lakh from two shops in the northern part of the state.
Fazal Rahman and B Vivish, both 19, from Kushal Nagar area of Kanhangad city and a 17-year-old youth from a nearby coastal village were arrested by Hosdurg police in Kasargod district.
A fourth member of the gang, 23-year-old Asif, has fled to Goa and efforts are on to nab him, officials said.
According to Kasargod Hostug police, the youths stole the food for their own consumption.
They were arrested for breaking into a shop in Kanhangad and stealing chocolates worth Rs 42,430. Upon questioning, they admitted taking ice cream from a store a few days earlier.
On January 14, the gang stole chocolates and Rs 1,680 from Monarch Enterprises in Kotacherry. The theft was caught on CCTV cameras at a nearby clothing store.
It is clear from the video that a young man wearing blue jeans and a light-colored shirt is standing guard while two other young men break the shutters to enter the store.
After examining the CCTV footage, police found that the robbery that took place at Karavalli Marketing Ice Cream Warehouse in Kanhanga Devada Karamukh a few days ago was carried out by the same gang. Ice cream worth Rs 70,000 was stolen from here.
Officials said the robbery at the ice cream warehouse was carried out by three members of the gang, except Fazal Rahman.
Security camera footage from both locations helped police investigate.
