Supreme Court defers Ramdev's plea for merger of cases to July

The Supreme Court on Friday postponed to July the hearing of a plea filed by yoga guru Ramdev against clubs in different states over his remarks that allopathic medicine cannot cure Covid-19.

A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and SVN Bhatti granted Bihar and Chhattisgarh two weeks to inform the status of their first information report (FIR) and charge sheet filed.

It also granted Ramdev’s lawyers freedom to question the plaintiffs in the case in the Supreme Court and tabled the matter until July.

Ramdev has approached the Supreme Court seeking protection from criminal FIRs filed against him in various states for allegedly making remarks on the efficacy of allopathic medicine in treating Covid-19.

The yoga guru’s plea sought to fight the FIR and transfer the case against him to Delhi. The plea also seeks stay of proceedings in various cases against him and protection from enforcement action in an FIR filed by the Patna and Raipur branches of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and transfer of the FIR to Delhi.

Ramdev has been booked under Sections 188 (Disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 269 (Negligent conduct likely to spread infection of life-threatening disease), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and others. The terms were filed. Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Ramdev is alleged to have said in a 2021 video: “Allopathy is a stupid science and drugs like Remdesivir, Fabifur and other drugs approved by the Drug Regulatory General of India have failed to treat Covid-19. 19 patients.”

His comments caused such outrage that the IMA issued him a legal notice.

The Raipur police in Chhattisgarh registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by the Raipur IMA unit against Ramdev for allegedly spreading “false” information about drugs used by the medical community to treat Covid-19.

According to the indictment, Ramdev allegedly spread false information and threatening remarks on social media against drugs used in the treatment of COVID-19 by the medical community, the Indian government, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other frontline organizations. 19.

The complaint states that there are multiple videos of Ramdev on social media in which he allegedly made such misleading statements.
