IIf you only watched the last 15 minutes of Saturday Night Live strictly come danceYou would be forgiven for thinking that the BBC had accidentally broadcast a somewhat disorganized dress rehearsal. But no – the crazy challenge happening live was a new thing in this year’s series. And it was something that I hope will always be good.
In its 23 series, strictly The owners have mixed things up but they have never dared to attempt anything on this scale. Over the years, celebrities and their professional partners have competed in ‘dance-a-thons’, which involve all the remaining couples performing the same style at the same time. These have had varying degrees of success (which is probably why the dance-a-thon never became a regular feature).
However, on Saturday night, bosses introduced an ‘Instant Dance’ challenge. Borrowed from US show dancing with the starsThe challenge is designed to mimic what professionals face in a competitive setting. When they opened an envelope to reveal the style they would perform in – which they were guaranteed to have learned earlier in the series – the couples had only a few seconds to choose an outfit and go to the dressing room. Upon returning to the studio, the celebrities and their supporting partners had to wait on separate staircases. They were then given only 10 seconds to talk before the music started.
It was chaotic, to put it mildly. But in the best way. Tess Daly stood with each pair as they learned what they would perform, while Claudia Winkleman helped the celebrities choose their outfits, which mainly meant forcing increasingly disorganized combinations of clothing into their hands.
On floor, some pairs flourished: Balvinder Sopal and Julian scored a spectacular paso double, while Lewis Cope and Katya Jones – who were crowned winners – were well prepared for all situations, and even planned a spectacular ending to their mini-routine. Others did not fare so well. Alex Kingston and Johannes Rabade played it very safe with their rumba (it was 11pm at a wedding) before Karen Carney and Carlos Gu relied too heavily on clapping and walking in a circle.
This mood before instant dance challenge strictly The studio was tense. Kingston began the live shows with a mistake-filled cha cha, which went from bad to worse as she struggled to recover from early footwork errors. Next up was George Clarke, who openly admitted his mistakes to the judges (which he soon regretted as it was revealed that two panelists had not seen them). Later, Sopal fought with all his might“There must be something in the water tonight,” Anton du Beke quipped, though he wasn’t really joking,
thankfully, Amber Davis and Karen Carney set the tone Because their routines both got high marks – but it also brought floods of tears from the latter’s partner, Carlos Gu.
The instant dance challenge was a much-needed mood booster. With only a maximum of six points, the stakes were low (I’m sure the most nervous celebrities were reminded of this fact several times). And even the couples who got the lowest scores looked like they were having fun. With adrenaline levels high, it seemed as if the impending dance-off had been temporarily forgotten. this last week strictly Can be intense – anything that can add some fun to the competition gets 10 points from me.
