Kolkata, October 26 (IANS) Two masons were crushed to death by a speeding ambulance in Ladukhwa area of Goalpokhar police station in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district, killing them. Police gave this information on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Luv Pal and Utpal Pal, residents of Ladukhwa area of Goalpokhar.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on Saturday night when the masons were returning home after completing their work.
Police said the speeding ambulance crushed the mason to death and fled from the spot.
On receiving the information, officials of Gwalpokhar police station reached the spot and sent the bodies to Islampur Departmental Hospital for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, after hearing the news, the relatives of both the deceased masons reached the hospital. The family members demanded strict action against the accused driver.
Eyewitness Jatin Pal told that the ambulance was coming at high speed from Ladukhwa area. Pal claimed that the ambulance driver was in an inebriated state.
Goalpokhar police said that raids are underway to nab the accused and seize the vehicle.
A senior North Dinajpur district police officer said, “We have started investigating the incident where an ambulance took the lives of two people. A case has been registered under hit and run. The ambulance and its driver are being searched. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.”
The accident comes just hours after three people were killed in a road accident in West Bengal’s Hooghly district.
According to the police, three potters died in a road accident in the Kanajuli area of Gurap police station on National Highway-19 in the early hours of Saturday.
Kumhar was traveling in a car, which suddenly lost control and collided with another vehicle in the Kanajuli area.
The deceased were identified as Divas Mandal (30), Kaushik Mandal (28) and Nimai Das (38).
Further investigation is underway.
