Several current and former directors at Tesla Inc and SpaceX were aware of Elon Musk’s use of illegal drugs, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.
There are concerns about the amount of illegal drug use Elon Musk takes and the use he takes with some board members, the newspaper reported, citing people who witnessed or were briefed on drug use. The newspaper said the board did not investigate the issue and did not document any concerns.
The relationship between Elon Musk and his directors came under fire this week from a Delaware judge, who said in a ruling that the board had a conflict of interest and that Musk’s $55 billion compensation package Too high.
Musk and his attorney, Alex Spiro, did not respond to requests for comment from The Wall Street Journal. The newspaper previously reported that Musk often used LSD, cocaine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms at private parties. Spiro told the Wall Street Journal in that report that Musk regularly took random drug tests at SpaceX and never failed a test.
The newspaper reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter, that some friends and directors believed they had to take illegal drugs with Musk or risk upsetting him. They also did not want to risk “losing social capital” by entering his circle, the newspaper said.
Musk took to X last month to respond to a Wall Street Journal report about his alleged drug use.
“Whatever I’m doing, I should obviously keep doing it!” Musk posted on X, calling Tesla and SpaceX the most valuable automotive and aerospace companies in the world. “If medications actually help increase my net productivity over time, I’ll definitely be taking them!”
Musk oversees six companies: Tesla, SpaceX and X (the social media company formerly known as Twitter); tunnel mining company The Boring Co; brain implant developer Neuralink; and artificial intelligence startup xAI.
