Singapore rules out hosting Commonwealth Games in fresh blow

The last Olympic Games were hosted by Birmingham, England in 2022.

Singapore:

On Wednesday, Singapore joined Malaysia in ruling out hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, further throwing the future of the multi-sport event into doubt.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has been trying to find a new host after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out last year due to soaring costs.

Malaysia emerged as a possible alternative but last month rejected the opportunity due to cost reasons, despite CGF offering 100 million pounds ($126 million) of the sweetener.

Financial support is available to any potential host.

“Singapore Commonwealth Games and Sports Singapore have studied the feasibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games and have decided not to bid for the Olympics,” the two sports bodies said in a joint statement, without giving further details.

Victoria’s sudden withdrawal, and the lack of a clear alternative, has raised doubts about the future of the Games. The Olympics are held every four years and most of the participating teams come from former British colonies.

The last Olympic Games were hosted by Birmingham, England in 2022.

The CGF hopes that the Paralympic Games’ strengths in inclusivity and integration, as well as the integration of para sports with able-bodied sports, will ensure that organizers become the host of the multi-sport event in two years’ time.

CGF chief executive Katie Sadleir acknowledged the time crunch but said efforts were being stepped up.

“The process of identifying a host for the 2026 Games is ongoing in parallel with interested Commonwealth Games associations,” she told AFP late last month.
