Iyer suffered an injury to his left rib while running back from point to take the catch, ruling Alex Carey out. Shortly after returning to the dressing room, he became unconscious and his vital signs rapidly declined.
The Indian team medical staff immediately rushed him to the hospital, where scans revealed injury to the spleen, which caused internal bleeding.

According to sources, his condition was critical when he was brought, but he is now medically stable. He is under observation in the ICU, where doctors are closely monitoring the bleeding. He is expected to remain under observation for two to seven days depending on his recovery.
“The BCCI medical team is monitoring his injury situation in consultation with experts in Sydney and India. The Indian team doctor will accompany Shreyas to Sydney to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official statement.
A source told PTI that Iyer’s internal bleeding had previously made the condition potentially life-threatening. The source said, “Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough guy and should recover soon.”
Initially, it was expected that Iyer would miss around three weeks of action, but his recovery may now take longer. He will probably have to stay in a Sydney hospital for at least a week before being allowed to return to India.
31 year old Iyer is not a part of India’s T20 team. BCCI is regularly informing his family about his condition.
