Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have reached a power-sharing deal that will see Sherbaz Sharif return as prime minister while politicians loyal to jailed Imran Khan excluded.
The PML-N and PPP also joined forces in 2022 to oust Imran Khan in a no-confidence vote, then shared power in a shaky alliance until the dissolution of the National Assembly ahead of August elections.
Shehbaz Sharif entered politics with his brother Nawaz in the mid-1980s. He has held various important positions over the years, including as Chief Minister of Punjab in 1997, 2008 and 2013.
In 2017, Sherbaz Sharif took office as Chairman of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). In 2019, Shehbaz Sharif faced legal trouble and was arrested on charges of money laundering and failing to make ends meet. After being released on bail, he served as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly when Imran Khan became prime minister in 2018.
Shehbaz Sharif was born in Lahore on September 23, 1951. He is the younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. After the partition of India and Pakistan, his parents immigrated to Pakistan. His father originally belonged to the Anantnag people in Kashmir, India, and his mother was from Pulwama.
Shehbaz Sharif holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Government College University, Lahore.
