Shabir Shah stable, receiving treatment: Tihar jail authorities

New Delhi: Tihar Jail officials on Friday issued a statement dismissing the reports related to the important health of Jammu and Kashmir separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah, stating that they were regularly receiving medical attention and their condition is stable.

The statement comes under the background of appeal for various political parties in Jammu and Kashmir and his daughter for appropriate medical care for Shah, which they claim that they are suffering from a life-threatening disease.

The statement said, “Some rumors are allegedly being broadcast about the important health status of prisoner Shabir Ahmed Shah on social media … The prisoner has been regularly provided with all medical attention and his position is stable,” the statement said that he was regularly provided with all medical support and his position is stable. It states that Shah was sent to Safdarjung Hospital on 26 June for an OPD consultation about “low urinary tract symptoms”, where he was later admitted for further tests and evaluation.

The statement said, “All his reports have been found to be general and appropriate medical treatment.

Shah was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on 4 June 2019 on charges of terrorist funding and was allegedly involved in anti-national activities. He is currently recorded in jail number one in Tihar.

Earlier this week, major political figures in Jammu and Kashmir voiced their concerns over Shah’s health.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti appealed to the Center to adopt a “human approach” in the case of Shah, urging proper medical care for his alleged life-drank disease.

National Conference leader and Lok Sabha member Aga Syed Rubullah Mehdi wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting “dignity and fairness” in providing medical treatment to the ailing separatist leader.

Mehdi, a Lok Sabha member of Srinagar, claimed that Shah’s doctors had recommended three surgery for serious medical conditions, in which he had described as “life-drank prostate cancer”.

These appeals gained momentum after a emotional petition posted on X by Shah’s daughter Sehar Shabir, who sought “justice and compassion” for her father.

“It is not political. It is not an opponent. It is not against any country, institution or government. It is only about my father’s life. His health. He has to be treated with respect. Is your conscience alive?” she wrote.

Sehar Shabir also said that his father has spent 38 years in jail without any conviction. (PTI)
