Eminent jurist and experienced senior Supreme Court lawyer Fali Nariman passed away today. He was 95 years old.
Fali Nariman passed away this morning at his Delhi home.
The renowned jurist was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhusam in 2007.
Fali Nariman started his practice as a lawyer in the Bombay High Court and later moved to Delhi. He was appointed Solicitor General of India in 1972. Fali Nariman had resigned in 1975 in protest against then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s decision to declare emergency.
The veteran lawyer was also the President of the Bar Association from 1991 to 2010.
Senior lawyer and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi expressed grief over Fali Nariman’s death, calling it “the end of an era”.
“End of an era – Passing away of #Falinariman, a living legend who will live forever in the hearts and minds in law and public life. Apart from all his diverse achievements, he stuck unwaveringly to his principles and called a spade a Said spade, a quality shared by all his talented son,” Mr Singhvi wrote on X.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the country had lost “a great personality of intellect and wisdom”. The country has lost the symbol of righteousness. The legal fraternity today is intellectually poor,” Mr Mehta said.
