Srinagar, Oct 26 (IANS) Senior National Conference (NC) leader and MP Mian Altaf Ahmed on Sunday said that since Omar Abdullah is the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, he should speak responsibly and with understanding.
Mian Altaf Ahmed was speaking at the fourth Halla Bole Conclave at a local hotel in Srinagar today, where he said that he cannot say that Omar Abdullah is on the right path as doing so would be giving wrong advice to Omar.
He said Omar Abdullah should speak responsibly and intelligently as he is the Chief Minister and his statements have wider implications.
Mian Altaf Ahmed represents Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency and is the most powerful religious and political Gujjar-Bakarwal leader of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said in the conclave on Sunday that there has been no meaningful political or administrative progress in Jammu and Kashmir since the formation of the new government.
“Since this government came to power, no positive steps have been taken towards resolving the political and administrative problems in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Mian Altaf Ahmed also indicated his support for another NC MP, Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who has been highly critical of the alleged failure of the NC government to fulfill its 2024 election promises.
“Omar Sahab should introspect and focus on governance rather than rhetoric. He should look at what rights and limitations he has and how he can better serve the people who elected him.”
“The political leadership of Kashmir has become busy debating who goes with the BJP or who opposes it, while the concerns of the people are ignored.
“The chief minister should be the one who talks about the welfare of the people,” the senior NC leader said.
He criticized the government for failing to launch a recruitment drive.
“Thousands of our educated youth in Jammu and Kashmir are becoming dejected. Many have postgraduate and PhD degrees, but no recruitment has taken place yet. The process should have started from day one with advertisements issued by recruitment agencies.”
“There is no doubt that elected representatives should raise public issues and fight for their rights, but things should not stop because we are fighting for the political rights of the people.”
Mian Altaf Ahmed also politely but strongly reacted to the remarks of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who had said that he did not know who Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi was.
He said that everyone knows who Ruhullah is and feigning ignorance about him will not reduce Ruhullah’s credibility and popularity.
