SEBI chief explains why she's a 'difficult boss to work with'

Madhabi Puri Buch was speaking at the annual convocation of IIM Ahmedabad.

Madhabi Puri Buch, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), said her “long list of colleagues” found her difficult to work with. Ms Buch, the first woman to lead a stock market regulator, was speaking at the annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Ms Buch, who was invited as chief guest at the graduation ceremony, said in her address to the students: “I have a long list of colleagues and bosses who will attest to the fact that I was not only a difficult boss to work for but an almost impossible boss to work with. subordinates because I will not give up. I will not give up until the problem is completely solved.”

Explaining why his colleagues think so, the SEBI chief added: “My colleagues often tell me that working on a problem with me is like peeling an onion. The whole process makes everyone cry. But when you’re done, it’s like peeling an onion. As you peel back layer after layer of onion, you suddenly realize there’s no problem.”

Ms. Bucher also said she lives by her motto of doing the right thing “no matter how hard you try.” She said that no matter how difficult the problem was, she would try her best to solve it.

She added: “I believe, on a conscious and subconscious level, my mantra is very, very simple. Do the right thing, no matter how difficult it is. No matter how hard it is, do it no matter how hard it is. The wonderful thing about this mantra is that 10 times out of 10 Eight times you’ll actually succeed. If you don’t do it twice, you’ll never regret it.”

She details that each graduate will discover their own guiding mantra as their innate “default setting” to effortlessly guide their path forward.
