The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday conducted raids at eight locations in and around the city in connection with its investigation into alleged irregularities in the School Service Commission (SSC) of West Bengal. A senior official said that the raid started around 6.30 am, which is still going on.
The official said searches were being conducted at the residences, offices and bungalows of people allegedly “acting as middlemen” in the scam. “These middlemen used to collect money and transfer it to different addresses. We are raiding the residences and offices used by them,” the ED official told. PTI,
Accompanied by a large contingent of central forces, ED officials launched search operations in New Town, Mukundpur and Nayabad on the eastern fringes of Kolkata, he said, adding that family members of the alleged middlemen were also interrogated. The official said one of these “middlemen” was close to former Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee and MLA Jibon Saha, both of whom were arrested in the same scam.
“One of the middlemen has hoarded assets at more than 400 places in the state and we are trying to trace the source of this money. Our officials are examining the bank documents and other papers related to the property,” he said.
The agency claimed that the name of another middleman has also come to light during their investigation and a search operation is currently underway at his residence. Incidentally, the CBI, which is probing the same scam, has also named this “middleman” as a key figure in the scam.
