German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday urged Israel to allow greater humanitarian aid into Gaza ahead of a two-day tour of the Middle East.
Scholz will travel to the Jordanian Red Sea port of Aqaba on Saturday and meet Jordanian King Abdullah on Sunday before flying to Israel to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“There is a need for larger aid to Gaza now. This is also a topic I have to talk about,” Scholz told reporters before traveling.
He also expressed concern about Israel’s planned offensive against the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than half of the 2.3 million Palestinian population has taken refuge.
“A full-scale attack on Rafah has the potential to cause many horrific civilian casualties and must be strictly prohibited,” he said.
The German air force said it had flown pallets containing 4 tons of relief supplies to the enclave on Saturday.
“Every package is important. But airdrops are just a drop in the ocean,” the ministry said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Hamas’s terror attack on October 7 triggered an Israeli air and ground offensive in Gaza, displacing much of the population and leaving people in dire need of food and other necessities.
