Prime Minister Narendra Modi may address a women’s rally in Barasat, West Bengal, on March 7, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader said on Sunday, after members of the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress party accused Allegations that Sandeshkhali sexually assaulted women have sparked political debate.
The scheduled rally will be held a day before International Women’s Day at the district headquarters of North 24-Parganas, where Sandeshkhali is located, they said.
West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, who came to attend the party’s national convention, said the prime minister may visit Barasat on March 7 and address a women’s rally.
Last week, Majumdar was injured and hospitalized in a clash with the police as BJP workers were prevented from going to Sandeshkari.
The BJP president, other party leaders and a central fact-finding team of the party have been blocked by police from visiting the area. Sandeshkari has strained relations with a large number of local women, accusing Trinamool Congress strongman Shahjahan Shaikh and his supporters of “land grabbing and sexual assault” against them under duress.
Sheikh has been absconding since a mob raided his residence on January 5 during an alleged ration scam. Two of Sheikh’s aides have been arrested, along with others accused of gang rape and attempted murder.
