PG&E said utility workers isolated the damaged line and shut off the flow of gas at 9:25 a.m. According to camera footage, an explosion occurred shortly afterward.
Doorbell footage showed an excavator digging in front of the house moments before the massive explosion, which instantly blew out walls and the roof. Onlookers appeared stunned before rushing to the debris to search for victims, and as police arrived at the scene, the sounds of emergency sirens could be heard in the distance, while flames began to spread across the site of the collapsed building.
As soon as the flames started spreading from the demolished structure, the police immediately reached the spot.
At least eight fire engines and two fire trucks responded to the three-alarm fire.
