A salmonella outbreak According to health officials, raw oysters have sickened more than 60 people in 22 states.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Said 64 people were tested across the country on Tuesday Fell ill with the same type of Salmonella. Of those cases, 20 people were hospitalized. No death was reported.
Of the 22 states affected by the outbreak, seven cases have been reported in New York, six in New Jersey and six in Virginia. The state most affected by the outbreak is Pennsylvania, where 10 cases have been reported so far.
California and Texas have each reported two cases, while Florida has reported three cases.
Salmonella is caused by bacteria, which is usually spread by eating contaminated food. Symptoms begin six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria and often include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
Most people recover without treatment after four to seven days. However, some vulnerable people — including children under five, adults age 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems — may experience more serious illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization, the CDC warned.
Even though more than 60 cases have been reported, CDC officials have warned that the actual number of people infected by the outbreak may be much higher. Officials said the outbreak could spread beyond states with known diseases.
Of the sick individuals who reported their illness to health authorities, 74 percent said they ate raw clams in the week they started feeling sick. The illnesses began on dates between June 21 and November 28, the CDC said.
The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating whether the oysters that were eaten had a common source. No recalls have been announced.
Health officials have urged people to cook oysters before eating to reduce the risk of food poisoning, saying hot sauce and lemon juice do not kill germs.
