Salesman arrested after stealing jewelery worth Rs 1 crore from shop

Police arrested a 27-year-old salesman for allegedly stealing jewelery worth Rs 105 crore from a shop in Maharashtra’s Thane city, an official said on Sunday.

Senior Inspector Abhay Mahajan of Naupada police station said the accused Rahul Jayantilal Mehta, who maintained a lavish lifestyle through theft, was arrested on March 26 when he was meeting his girlfriend in Mira Road area.

The owner of a jewelery shop in Talao Pali area reported the theft to the police on March 25, following which an FIR was registered against the accused under Section 408 (breach of trust by clerk or servant) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused, who was responsible for overseeing sales at the store, allegedly stole 70 pieces of jewelery weighing a total of 1.59 kg and worth approximately Rs 1,05,55,766 between November 2023 and March 2024, the official said.

The defendant had not been at work since March 8, 2024, and was reported missing by his wife on March 15.

The official said that based on the investigation, he traveled to neighboring Mumbai, Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and other places to evade arrest.

The police received a tip that he planned to come to the Mira Road area to meet his girlfriend on March 26.

Acting on this information, police conducted surveillance and nabbed the accused when they reached there, the official said.

He said that after interrogating the man, police learned that he maintained a lavish lifestyle, including frequenting bars and five-star hotels, with money accumulated through thefts.

Police said that so far, 900 grams of jewelery worth about Rs 62.10 million has been recovered from the accused.
