Srinagar, Oct 25 (IANS) People’s Conference (PC) chief and MLA Sajjad Lone on Saturday accused the National Conference (NC) of “gifting” seven MLAs to the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections, while Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reacted by asking Sajjad not to act like a “professor” after boycotting the elections.
PC chief and Handwara MLA Sajjad Lone accused the National Conference of “gifting” seven MLAs to the BJP during the recent Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a press conference here, Sajjad also announced that his party would soon launch a “full-scale campaign” against the ongoing reservation policy in the Union Territory, which he claimed was eroding merit and depriving Kashmiri candidates of government job opportunities.
Sajad Lone said, “This government is hell-bent on eliminating meritocracy. Open meritocracy has been buried. We are going to launch a grassroots registration campaign against this policy.” He warned that the current system was “pushing Kashmir towards a major disaster”.
Lone further said that if necessary, his party will take to the streets.
“If there is a need for a hunger strike or mass protests, we will not hesitate. Enough is enough,” he said.
He accused NC of facilitating cross voting in favor of BJP.
In the Rajya Sabha elections held on Friday, the NC won three and the BJP won one of the four seats.
Omar Abdullah has targeted Sajjad Lone and accused him of boycotting the recent Rajya Sabha elections to save the BJP.
He said that Sajjad Lone did not want to vote against BJP.
CM Omar commented, “Lone had some compulsion and did not want to harm the BJP, so he openly boycotted the elections and stayed away from voting.”
Taking a dig at Loan, the Chief Minister said, ‘Now he is making big reels like a professor, but people should remember what he had done during the elections.
Omar Abdullah made the comments while reacting to the BJP’s “unexpected win” on a Rajya Sabha seat from Jammu and Kashmir, while the NC claimed all its votes were intact.
