One person was killed and 22 others were injured in a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory rally on Thursday. Three people are in custody after an attack near Union Station in Kansas City, police said.
Police said two teenagers were detained after the incident. mass shooting. They have not yet released the suspect’s name.
However, hours after the incident, social media users linked “44-year-old illegal immigrant Sahir Omar” to the Kansas City mass shooting.
“At least one of the Kansas City Chiefs parade shooters has been identified as Sahil Omar, a 44-year-old illegal immigrant,” read a post on X, formerly Twitter.
However, there are no reliable reports that Sahir Omar is one of the gunmen.
Using Muslim-sounding names and incorrectly designating as illegal immigrants is not uncommon on social media. The name “Sahir Omar” also came up after the explosion at the Sandman Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas, in January.
“Sahir Omar” has also been wrongly linked to the November 2023 Rainbow Bridge incident on the US-Canada border and the December 2023 shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. But it’s unclear whether the real “Sahir Omar” exists, and disinformation appears aimed at linking immigrants to mass shootings and crime.
