Russian-American suspected of raising aid for Ukraine arrested

Treason in Russia punishable by up to 20 years in prison (document)

Moscow:

Russia’s FSB security service said on Tuesday it had arrested an American-Russian woman suspected of treason and raising funds for the Ukrainian army, state media reported.

Russia’s Federal Security Service in the central Ural city of Yekaterinburg said it had “put an end to” the illegal activities of a 33-year-old woman who is a Los Angeles resident and has taken dual citizenship into custody.

The unnamed woman had been “actively raising funds… which were subsequently used to purchase tactical medical supplies, equipment, means of sabotage and ammunition for the Ukrainian armed forces,” Russian news agencies said, citing a statement from Russia’s Federal Security Service.

RIA Novosti released a video from Russia’s Federal Security Service showing masked police escorting and handcuffing a woman wearing a white coat and a white hat covering her eyes.

Russia’s Federal Security Service said her actions “endangered the security of our country” and that she had supported Ukrainian forces while in the United States, the news agency reported.

In Russia, treason is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Several U.S. citizens are currently imprisoned in Russia, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested last year on espionage charges that he, his employer and the U.S. government deny this allegation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he wants to negotiate a prisoner swap in which Russians imprisoned abroad would be exchanged for U.S. citizens detained in Russia.
