Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday criticized U.S. Democrats’ plans to hold a Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland ahead of this year’s U.S. presidential election as futile.
The high-level meeting will be held in Switzerland from June 15 to 16, and Swiss media said US President Joe Biden is expected to attend.
The state-run TASS news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying, “American Democrats need photos and videos of the incident to show that their ‘Ukraine’ project is still ongoing and that they are behind it.”
Her primary motivation in blaming Washington is its electoral process.
“The election is everything. Ukraine is nothing,” she said.
The Swiss government said on Wednesday that the peace conference will be held on June 15-16 at the luxury resort of Bürgenstock near the central city of Lucerne and will be chaired by President Viola Armheld.
Russia accuses Switzerland of abandoning its traditional neutrality over the conflict in Ukraine and how to deal with Russia’s banking-state assets.
Moscow summoned the Swiss ambassador last month to pave the way for the seizure of Russian assets in the country.
