It’s the “end of an era” as MS Dhoni resigns as captain of Chennai Super Kings and is replaced by Ruturaj Gaikwad for the IPL 2024 season. The announcement comes after a meeting between the former captains of CSK and Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opener on Friday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday. Dhoni was appointed captain of CSK in the inaugural season of IPL in 2008 and under his leadership, CSK won five IPL titles, joining Mumbai Indians as the team with the most titles in the history of the tournament. After the news was announced, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma reacted to the news on social media and his post has gone viral.
Rohit, who was also replaced as Mumbai Indians captain before the match, posted a picture of himself with Dhoni along with a handshake emoji. Rohit was replaced by Hardik Pandya, who completed a blockbuster deal from Gujarat Titans to MI ahead of the new season.

“MS Dhoni has handed over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 IPL games during this period matches. The team is looking forward to the upcoming season,” CSK said.

There were speculations that Dhoni would retire at the end of the season, so the franchise felt the need to provide a smooth transition for the stalwart.
Gaikwad, who has played 6 ODIs and 19 T20 matches for India, made his CSK debut for India in 2020 and went on to represent the team in 52 matches.
