The Congress party is yet to announce its candidates for the high-stakes contest from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh on May 20. Senior leader Rahul Gandhi kept the suspense at today’s press conference and was non-committal when asked who would contest. The opponent in the party is Smriti Irani of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

When asked about who will be elected by the Congress, Gandhi said: “This is a matter of the BJP, very well. Whatever order I receive, I will follow it. In our party, all these (selection of candidates) Decisions are taken by the Congress Party Election Committee,” said Amithi.

He added that he was a fighter for the party and would abide by the committee’s decision.

Amethi, once a bastion of the Gandhi family, was won by the BJP in the 2019 elections. Speculations are rife that Rahul Gandhi, who has been nominated from Wayanad, will also contest from Amithi.

The 53-year-old leader is expected to fight to regain the seat, which was earlier represented by his uncle Sanjay Gandhi, father Rajiv Gandhi and later mother Sonia Gandhi.

Robert Vadra, husband of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also said the Amethi people wanted him to represent them and would make a decision in due course The decision to become a candidate for the Lok Sabha polls.

“They want me to represent them, go to their areas and listen to their problems so that they can progress. I am also interested in entering politics but will take the decision at the right time. There is no rush now,” he told reporters.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Islamic Party of Iran ousted Rahul Gandhi, ending his 15-year rule over Amethi.

The Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be held in seven phases starting from April 19. Counting will begin on June 4.

Rahul Gandhi today claimed that there is a strong undercurrent in favor of the opposition Hindu bloc in the Lok Sabha elections and that the BJP will be restricted to 150 seats.

“15-20 days ago, I thought the BJP would win around 180 seats, but now I think they will win 150 seats. We are getting reports from every state that we are making progress,” he said.
