Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the advertisement for the appointment of the new head coach will be released soon. Rahul Dravid, who has been the head coach of Team India since November 2021, had his contract extended after the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But, it does not seem that Dravid will be given an extension, the board will soon advertise for a new coach. Dravid’s current contract with the BCCI as the head coach of the Indian team expires in June, when the Indian team will also be involved in the T20 World Cup campaign.

Dravid signed an extension as head coach of the Indian team along with his support staff until November 2023. But, the new contract was valid only till the end of June 2024.

Jay Shah has confirmed that Dravid can apply for the role if he wishes but there will be no automatic extension as before.

“Rahul’s tenure is only till June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so,” the BCCI secretary told Cricbuzz. He also refused the possibility of appointing a foreign coach.

“We cannot decide whether the new coach will be an Indian or a foreigner. It will depend on the CAC and we are a global body,” the BCCI official said.

Shah ruled out the possibility of appointing different coaches for different formats, like some other international boards.

“This decision will also be taken by the CAC. There are many all-format players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India.”

Shah was also asked about the impact player rule, which has been heavily criticized by active international stars including India captain Rohit Sharma. Shah said he would discuss the matter with stakeholders and decide whether the rule needs to be continued.

“The impact on the players was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL,” he said, stressing that the rule hinders the development of all-rounders. “We will discuss with stakeholders – franchises and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It is not permanent, but no one has reacted against the rule.”
