Hoshiarpur, Punjab:
A police team was attacked and one officer shot dead while conducting a raid in a local village on Sunday to capture a man suspected of possessing illegal weapons.
The incident took place in Mansoorpur village, about 66 kilometers away from here. The police officer was identified as Amritpal Singh, a police officer of the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA).
Hoshiarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surendra Lamba said that a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) team was in the village to raid the residence of Sukhwinder Singh.
When the team entered the house, the suspects opened fire and Constable Amritpal Singh was shot in the chest, Lamba said.
The other team members escaped unhurt but Sukhwinder Singh managed to escape from the spot, he said.
Amritpal Singh was initially admitted to the civil hospital in Mukerian, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to a private hospital, where he died, the SSP said.
Lamba added that operations to arrest Sukhwinder Singh were on and police were conducting raids at locations suspected to be his hideout.
