Punjab Police registers case of murder in death of protesting farmer

One person killed and 12 security personnel injured in clash in Khanauri on Punjab-Haryana border

Chandigarh:

Seven days after the death of Shubhakaran Singh during a clash between protesting farmers and Haryana security personnel at Khanauri border point, Punjab Police registered a case of murder on Wednesday night.

Bathinda native Shubhakaran (21) was killed and 12 security personnel were injured in a clash at Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border on February 21. The incident occurred when some protesting farmers were trying to move towards the police barricade. Stop their “Dilli Chalo” march.

Punjab Police has registered a case under sections 302 (murder) and 114 (being abettor of commission of an offence) of the Indian Penal Code at Patran police station in Patiala.

According to the FIR registered on the complaint of Shubhakaran’s father, a case has been registered against an unknown person.

According to the FIR, the place of incident has been shown at Garhi in Jind district of Haryana.

Khanauri is situated near Jind district.

With the registration of the FIR, the deadlock between the farmers and the Punjab government ends and the way for the post-mortem of the dead body is cleared.

The farmer leaders leading the march were adamant that an FIR be registered before allowing the post-mortem. The body has been kept in the mortuary of Rajindra Hospital, Patiala.

Shubhakaran is likely to be cremated on Thursday.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job for Shubhakaran’s sister.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are leading the agitation to put pressure on the Center to accept their demands, including legal guarantee on minimum support price for crops and farm loan waiver.

Most of the farmers from Punjab participating in the agitation are camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points.

Farmer leaders have said that the protesters will continue camping in Khanauri and Shambhu till February 29, when the next course of action will be decided. PTI CHS VSD SZM
