Estranged British royals Prince Harry and his American wife Meghan said on Friday they wished Catherine, Princess of Wales, “good health and recovery” after she revealed she had cancer.
The announcement comes after Catherine, widely known as Kate, announced she suffers from an undisclosed disease and is in the early stages of chemotherapy.
“We wish Kate and her family good health and recovery and hope they can do so privately and peacefully,” the couple from California said.
News of Kate’s diagnosis comes at a time of turmoil for relations within the British royal family.
Harry and Meghan, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are no longer working members of the royal family, having resigned amid mutual recriminations over the way they were treated by “the company.”
They moved to California in 2020, live in an exclusive enclave outside Santa Barbara, and are now building their own business after breaking away from the royal family’s financial support.
Prince Harry, who had a fairytale wedding to former actress Meghan in 2018, was once very close to Prince William, but their relationship has soured in recent years.
The brothers reportedly didn’t speak for months after Harry publicly criticized his family.
Harry has repeatedly complained that he and his wife were abused during their time as royals and published his autobiography “Spare” in January 2023.
In the best-selling book, he revealed years of family feuding, including claims that William physically assaulted him during an argument about Meghan.
The publication follows a series of high-profile interviews and a six-hour Netflix documentary series in which Harry and Meghan repeatedly criticized members of the royal family.
In remarks widely seen as damaging to the monarchy, Meghan, who is biracial, also told US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that questions about her son Archie’s skin color had been raised before he was born.
The claim prompted William to angrily respond that the royal family is “not a racist family at all.”
The couple have rarely visited Britain since moving to the United States, including attending the funeral of Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September.
In a rare joint outing, the tension was palpable as Harry and Meghan accompanied William and Kate on a walk at Windsor Castle to review a floral tribute to the late monarch.
Harry was once a popular member of the British royal family and had long been seen as a breath of fresh air in the sclerotic institution. A young man who got himself into very human predicaments and was open about his mental health issues.
His marriage to Meghan was a big deal, with the couple initially receiving a warm welcome from the public.
But the mood shifted when stories about Meghan’s diva behavior began to emerge, which critics said fueled Harry’s dissatisfaction.
