What is Aadhaar Biometric Locking?

Biometric Locking/Unlocking service enables individuals with Aadhaar to securely and temporarily release their biometrics. This feature is designed to enhance the privacy and confidentiality of the biometric data of the Aadhaar-holder.

Which biometric data can be locked?

Once biometric locking is activated, fingerprints, iris and facial patterns will be secured. Thereafter, the Aadhaar holder cannot use these biometric modalities for Aadhaar authentication.

What happens when biometrics are locked?

Activation of locked biometrics ensures that Aadhaar holders cannot use their biometrics (fingerprints/iris/face) for authentication. This acts as a security feature to prevent any type of biometric authentication.

Additionally, it ensures that no entity, through any method, can perform biometric-based Aadhaar authentication for the respective Aadhaar holder.

How to unlock (lock) biometrics?

On activating the biometric locking system, the biometrics remain locked until their Aadhaar is added.

Aadhaar holders can choose any of these options:

Unlock it (which is temporary) or disable the locking system

Aadhaar holders have the option to unlock their biometrics through various means, including visiting the UIDAI website, enrollment centre, Aadhaar Service Center (ASK) or using the mAadhaar app.

To access this service, it is important to have a registered mobile number. If your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar, please visit the nearest enrollment centre.

Who needs to lock biometrics and when?

Aadhaar number holders with registered mobile number have the option to lock their biometrics. This feature is designed to enhance the privacy and confidentiality of the biometric data of the Aadhaar-holder.

Upon biometric locking, if a UID is employed to implement any authentication services using a biometric modality (fingerprint/iris/face), a specified error code ‘330’ will be presented, indicating that Biometrics are locked. As a result, the entity will be unable to perform biometric authentication.
