A man who doused himself with accelerant and set himself on fire outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump was being tried has died, police said.

The New York City Police Department told The Associated Press early Saturday that staff at a local hospital pronounced the man dead.

Officials and witnesses said the man took out pamphlets supporting conspiracy theories at Collect Pond around 1:30 pm on Friday, threw them around, then doused himself in accelerant and set himself on fire.

There was a large police presence nearby at the time of the incident. Several police officers and bystanders came to the aid of the man, who was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police said the man traveled from Florida to New York over the past few days and entered the park without breaching any security checkpoints.

The park outside the courthouse has been a gathering place for protesters, reporters and onlookers throughout Trump’s trial, starting with jury selection on Monday.

Throughout Friday, streets and sidewalks in the area around the courthouse were generally open, crowds were small and generally orderly.

Authorities said they are also reviewing safety protocols, including whether to restrict access to the park. The alley where Trump enters and exits the building is closed to traffic.

“We may have to close this area down,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry told a news conference outside the courthouse, adding that officials would discuss security plans soon.
