Jaipur, Oct 28 (IANS) The cyber crime branch of Rajasthan Police on Tuesday issued an advisory to alert the public about the growing cyber crime trend, known as digital arrest.
Police has clarified that no police department or government agency arrests any person through video call or any digital medium. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to this fraud.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Cyber Crime, Vikas Sharma said that cyber criminals pose as officers of CBI, Police, Customs, Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax Department or Judiciary.
“They contact the victims over phone and use intimidating tactics such as claiming that the victim’s children or family members have committed a crime and will be arrested, alleging that money linked to anti-national activities or money laundering has been deposited in the victim’s bank account, demanding verification of all bank accounts, FDs or investments and claiming that the SIM card issued using the victim’s Aadhaar number is involved in a crime. Is,” he said.
Using these false threats, criminals intimidate and “digitally arrest” victims by keeping them on constant video calls, he said.
DIG Sharma further said that after the initial threat, victims often receive a video call from a fake senior officer.
He said this fraudster demands the victim to deposit money in a “government bank account” for verification, falsely claiming that it is part of the tax or investigation process.
He said, “In reality, this account belongs to cyber criminals. The fraudsters force the victims to be on video calls during the so-called investigation and warn them not to share the information with anyone, including the police.”
He said that to avoid such scams, the public should never make a video call to anyone claiming to be a police or government official in connection with a crime, should not send money if someone demands payment over a video or phone call – no government agency will ever do this, check the caller ID – make sure the call is from an Indian number starting with +91, if you receive such a threatening or suspicious call immediately report to the nearest police station or cyber police station Report to, lodge a complaint online at National.
