Somali police say security forces have ended a siege by al-Shabaab militants on a heavily fortified hotel in central Mogadishu.

Police officials told AFP that all armed attackers had been killed and the situation had returned to normal, with security teams thoroughly clearing the area.

There was no word yet on casualties.

Witnesses and officials said security forces were seen surrounding the SYL Hotel in central Mogadishu on Thursday night shortly after militants stormed the hotel.

A resident told VOA there was an explosion outside the hotel. Moments later, the witness said he heard gunshots coming from inside the hotel.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. The hotel is a frequent gathering place for government officials and lawmakers and has been the target of several attacks by al-Shabab in the past.
