PM Modi visits UAE, Qatar this week: From Hindu temple inauguration to bilateral talks, what’s on his agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a two-day official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from February 13 to 14, 2024. After visiting the UAE, the Prime Minister will travel to Doha, Qatar, on the afternoon of February 14.

The prime minister plans to hold a bilateral meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which will be his seventh visit to the country since 2015 and the third in the past eight months access.

PM Modi’s UAE agenda

According to an official press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders will discuss how to further deepen, expand and strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries and exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest.

Prime Minister Modi plans to inaugurate the BAPS Mandir, the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, during his visit, which is a major development. He will also address the Indian community in the UAE at an event at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.

He will also meet with UAE Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as well as the country’s Prime Minister and Defense Minister.

Prime Minister Modi will also attend the World Government Summit 2024 to be held in Dubai as the chief guest and deliver a special keynote address at the summit.

After the Prime Minister visited the UAE in August 2015, the bilateral relations between the two countries were upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The two countries signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in February 2022 and the Local Currency Settlement (LCS) System in July 2023 to facilitate the use of Indian rupees and dirhams in cross-border transactions.

The two countries are one of each other’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade volume in 2022-23 being approximately US$85 billion. The UAE is also among the top four investors in India in terms of foreign direct investment in 2022-23, according to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs.

PM Modi to visit Qatar after UAE

Addressing the media on Monday, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said: “After concluding his visit to the UAE on February 14, the Prime Minister will travel to Doha, Qatar, on the afternoon of February 14. During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad and senior dignitaries of Qatar.”

He further said that this will be the Prime Minister’s second visit to Qatar and bilateral trade between India and Qatar is strong and currently stands at $20 billion.

In a major diplomatic victory for India, eight Indian Navy veterans who were sentenced to death in Qatar were released on Monday, February 12. The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that 7 of the 8 veterans have returned to India.

The seven Navy veterans who returned to India on Monday are Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Lieutenant Colonel Punandu Tiwari, Birendra Kumar Veer Captain Ma, Lieutenant Colonel Sugunakar Pacala, Lieutenant Colonel Sanjeev Gupta, Lieutenant Colonel Amit Nagpal and Sailor Ragesh. They work for a private company called Dahra Global.
