Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he could have introduced an economic white paper when he took office in 2014 but chose “rashtraneeti” instead of “rajneeti” as he did not want to break the trust of the people.

Speaking at the ET NOW Global Business Summit organized by Times Group, Modi said that in the decade before 2014, the country’s ruling policies were taking the country on the road to bankruptcy.

“We have submitted an economic white paper to Parliament on this,” he said.

“The discussion on this is ongoing. Since there is such a large audience, I would also like to express my ‘Mann ki Baat’, the white paper that I am bringing now, I could have brought in 2014. Modi said launching the white paper in 2014 was politically beneficial to him.

“‘Rajniti’ told me to do this but ‘Rashtraneeti’ did not allow me to do so, therefore, I chose ‘rashtraneeti’ instead of ‘rajneeti’. When the situation became more serious in a decade and we could withstand any attack, I think I owe it to the people to tell the truth, which is why I launched a white paper in Parliament,” he said.

Modi said he guaranteed that India would become the world’s third largest economy in his third term.
