PM Modi reaches Muscat; Major trade deals on the agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Muscat, Oman on Wednesday, December 17 for a two-day visit, where he is expected to finalize a free trade agreement that was approved by the Union Cabinet last Friday.

Invited by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, the visit also marks 70 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Muscat is also the final destination of his three-nation tour Jordan And Ethiopia Too.

Modi was welcomed at the airport by Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister for Defense Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said. “This is a land of enduring friendship and deep historical ties with India. This visit provides an opportunity to explore new avenues of cooperation and add new momentum to our partnership,” he posted on social media.

Arun Chatterjee, Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), had earlier commented that if the agreement is signed This visit will not only deepen economic ties but will also open a new chapter in India-Oman trade and commercial relations.

Apart from strengthening relations with the leaders of Oman, PM Modi’s address is also fixed. Gathering of NRIs.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) earlier described the visit as an opportunity to comprehensively review the bilateral partnership in the areas of trade, investment, energy, defence, security, technology, agriculture and culture as well as exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Earlier, during the Prime Minister’s maiden visit to Ethiopia he was awarded Ethiopia’s highest civilian award, The Great Honor Mark of Ethiopia, making him the first global head of state to receive this award. During the visit, India and Ethiopia elevated their relations to the level of “strategic partnership”.
