The University of Edinburgh announced that Nobel Prize winner and physicist Professor Peter Higgs has died at the age of 94.

The subatomic particle the Higgs boson is named after him.

A statement from the university said: “It has been confirmed that Professor Peter Higgs has died aged 94.

“He passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, April 8, following a brief illness.

“His family asks that the media and public respect their privacy at this time.”

Professor Sir Peter Mathieson, Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: “Peter Higgs was an outstanding individual – a truly gifted scientist whose vision and imagination enriched our understanding of the world around us. know.

“His groundbreaking work inspired thousands of scientists, and his legacy will continue to inspire many more generations to come.”
