A man facing murder charges in Pennsylvania and carjacking and weapons charges in New Jersey is suspected of killing three family members, hijacking vehicles and killing police in both states, authorities said Sunday. Evade law enforcement for hours.
Andre Gordon Jr, 26, was charged in Bucks County, Pa., with three counts of first- and second-degree murder, aggravated assault, robbery and other counts, according to court documents. In New Jersey, Gordon was charged with first-degree carjacking and weapons offenses, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said in a statement Sunday.
“This series of violent acts … is the latest in a string of horrific examples of how illegal guns and assault rifles can make an aggrieved and disturbed actor stronger,” Platkin said. Victims demand justice and defendants are held accountable for their reprehensible actions.”
Pennsylvania court documents do not list an attorney for Gordon, and the phone number listed in his name is not in service. New Jersey authorities said they did not yet have information about Gordon’s defense attorney in that state.
Authorities said Gordon carjacked a car in Trenton around 8:40 a.m. Saturday and drove to Levittown, Falls Township, Pa., where he killed his stepmother and sister. Authorities say he then drove to a second location in Levittown and killed the mother of two.
On Saturday, Bucks County District Attorney Jennifer Schorn identified the victims as the suspect’s stepmother, Karen Gordon, 52; and his sister Kera Gordon, 13; and Taylor, 25 Taylor Daniel, the mother of his two children, was present when the shooting occurred. He is also accused of assaulting Daniel’s mother with an assault weapon; she was taken to hospital for treatment.
He then carjacked a second vehicle in Morrisville and returned to Trenton, authorities said. Police surrounded a home for several hours, believing he was there, but Gordon apparently slipped away before police could set up the cordon. He was arrested around 5 p.m. after he was found unarmed walking down the street a few blocks away, police said.
Pennsylvania officials said they could not yet reveal a motive for the attack. Falls Township Police Chief Nelson Whitney said at a news conference that while Gordon had had some minor run-ins with the law, “that was not an indication that something like this would happen.”
Authorities said the unrest forced the cancellation of the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the closure of the Sesame Street-themed amusement park and the closure of several other businesses. Authorities in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, issued a shelter-in-place order for several hours for some areas.
Platkin said the crimes “shocked and horrified the communities in Bucks and Mercer counties.”
Gordon is currently being held at the Mercer County Correctional Center. Trenton Police Chief Steve Wilson said Gordon will be extradited to Pennsylvania “at some point.”
